5 Steps to Creating a Lessons Learned Journal

Legends Journal

At some point in our lives, we want to write down experiences thoughts, and happenings in our life.  For some, it’s an easy task to stick with, but for the rest of us…

There are many different approaches to writing a journal, but one approach can be the most rewarding for yourself,  those who might read your journal in the future, and be very easy to create and come back to enjoy.

Creating a Lessons Learned Journal

A Lessons Learned Journal is a collection of brief (or long) experience descriptions and the lessons you learned from the experiences.

Below are the 5 Easy Steps to get going

1.   Select a Journal

An heirloom quality journal is a great place to store your experiences and lessons learned.  Selecting a journal first can help set the tone of your writings.  A large leather or regular sized handmade journal can be a great location for some of your best life’s lessons.

2.  Write your First Experience and Lesson

Grab a regular sheet of paper and write out an experience and the lesson learned as a practice so you develop the format you like before writing in your heirloom journal (you could use this approach for each experience if you want to get the wording just right).

3.  Organize Your Thoughts

If you’re like the rest of us, just skip this step and start writing.  If you’re not, create a list of experiences you want to start out with.

4.  Start Writing in your Journal

Try giving a title to each experience with the name of the lesson you learned.  Then write your experience and show how you learned the lesson.  Easy as pie!

5.  Let others Know about your Journal

This is a very important step.  If you want the journal to benefit family members, let them know you have one.  They don’t have to have access to it until you want them to , but letting them know you have such a journal will help insure it gets found and passed on.

Writing a Lessons Learned journal will reward not only family who may read it in the future, but also help you glean more from the experiences, good and bad, that you’ve had during your life.  So go ahead, get started.
